The Experience
Walking into Café Gratitude feels like stepping into someone’s beautifully curated living room. The Crossroads location sits on a quiet block just south of the main gallery strip, tucked between a vintage furniture store and a craft cocktail bar. Exposed brick walls are softened by trailing pothos vines and warm Edison bulb lighting. The playlist leans jazzy lo-fi, and the energy is relaxed but buzzing — a mix of creative professionals, yoga moms, and first-date couples.
We arrived on a Saturday evening around 7pm and were seated within ten minutes despite not having a reservation. Our server, Marcus, was immediately warm and knowledgeable — he’d clearly eaten his way through the entire menu and had genuine opinions about every dish.
The Food
The menu at Café Gratitude is entirely plant-based, which is a rarity in KC and an absolute treat. We started with the Crispy Cauliflower Bites — lightly battered, flash-fried, and tossed in a gochujang maple glaze that had just the right amount of heat. These alone are worth the trip.
For mains, I went with the Truffle Mushroom Risotto, made with arborio rice and a blend of shiitake, oyster, and cremini mushrooms. The texture was creamy perfection, and the truffle oil was used with admirable restraint. My dining partner ordered the BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich — smoky, tangy, and piled high on a brioche bun with house-made coleslaw. It’s the kind of dish that makes omnivores do a double-take.
Dessert was a Lavender Crème Brûlée made with coconut cream. Subtle, elegant, and the perfect end to a wonderful meal.
The Vibe
Café Gratitude nails the balance between casual and special. You could come here in jeans after a gallery walk or dress up for a date night — either way, you’d fit right in. The open kitchen adds energy without noise, and the patio out back (strung with fairy lights) is an absolute gem in warmer months.
The Verdict
Café Gratitude is the kind of restaurant KC has been missing. It’s not trying to convince you that vegetables can be “just as good as meat” — it’s showing you that plant-based food can be its own extraordinary thing. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or just plant-curious, this is a must-visit. Bring your foodie friends and your appetite.
