The Green Room: Westport’s Coziest Vegetarian Hideaway

The Experience

The Green Room is the kind of neighborhood spot that every city needs. Tucked into a small storefront on Westport Road, it’s cozy, unpretentious, and feels like your cool friend’s kitchen. Mismatched furniture, a chalkboard menu, and local art on the walls give it character without trying too hard. The space is small — maybe 30 seats — so it fills up quickly during weekend brunch.

The Food

Don’t let the casual vibe fool you — the food at The Green Room punches well above its price point. The Southwest Black Bean Bowl is a house favorite: seasoned black beans over cilantro-lime rice, topped with roasted corn salsa, pickled onions, avocado, and a drizzle of chipotle cashew crema. It’s hearty, flavorful, and under $12.

The Mushroom Melt on sourdough is another winner — sautéed portobello and cremini mushrooms with caramelized onions, swiss cheese (vegan option available), and a smear of garlic aioli. For brunch, the Tofu Scramble with seasonal veggies and home fries is legitimately the best in KC. I’ll die on that hill.

The Vibe

Casual, community-driven, and a little bit granola — in the best way. The Green Room attracts a diverse crowd: students, artists, young families, and the occasional dog waiting patiently by the patio fence. The Wi-Fi is solid, making it a great work-from-café spot on weekday mornings.

The Verdict

The Green Room is proof that vegetarian comfort food doesn’t have to break the bank. It’s not trying to be fancy — it’s trying to be good, and it succeeds. The space is small and the decor is basic, which keeps the experience score honest, but the food and service more than make up for it. A weekly staple in my rotation.
